You must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the course.

We strongly recommend learners attend the National Pool Plant Foundation Certificate course to acquire the base level knowledge before attending the National Pool Plant Operators Certificate course.

There is a pre course preparation sheet which is required to be completed prior to the course. This is to be taken on the first day of the course for initial discussions with the course tutor.
This pre course preparation sheet is downloadable from the course confirmation webfolio which is sent by email to all registered learners 7 days prior to the course by the IoS.

This three-day accredited course with PWTAG is the essential technical qualification for staff involved in day-to-day pool plant operation, or those responsible for plant management.

Course aim

By the end of the course successful candidates will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the design and operation of their own pool plant including the circulation, filtration, disinfection, pH correction and heating of pool water. They will know how to maintain water that is in ‘balance' and which is safe and pleasant to swim in. Learners will be able to use correct techniques to test pool water and understand the remedial action required to restore ideal conditions, the technical requirements for ensuring safe and efficient operation of pool plant.

It is strongly recommended personal email addresses are used when registering as an individual with the IoS to assist with awarding by IQL UK (Awarding body of RLSS UK)


This course is assessed using a multiple choice test on the third day of the course, followed by a post course work based assignment.

This assignment has to be completed within 3 weeks from the last day of the course and received by the IoS within the 3 week time frame. To complete the assignment, learners need access to an operational plant room.

Awarding times will be between 5-7 weeks following the course.

The registration period for this qualification is 12 months from the start date of the course, if any learner does not complete the course and assessment within this time they will need to re-register and re-attend another course, please note that this will incur further charges.

This qualification is not graded. Learners will either meet the requirements and pass or will not meet the requirements and be referred.

Learners who achieve the Pool Plant Operator Certificate will be added to PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) SPTO Register (Swimming Pool Technical Operator) for 3 years. To view this register, please click here

Attend a National Pool Plant Operator RoPPPs Update Seminar within 3 years to update your certificate

Pool Plant qualifications expire after a period of three years. To ensure you keep your knowledge current with the latest information, best practice and changes to industry guidance, you will need to renew your qualification prior to the expiry date of your qualification. You can do this by either attending a face-to-face revalidation course or completing the online Pool Plant Operator Revalidation which can be found here

Once qualified, it is recommended that pool operators are reassessed annually in the workplace for competence as a minimum in water testing.
